Chomp SMS 9.13

Aren't you already bored of your default SMS app? I bet you are, especially if you are a messaging freak like I am. It's true that there are a plethora of apps that want to win your heart and become the default messaging application on your phone. But what I discovered is that chomp SMS is a little bit more than a pretender with alternative skins.

That's not to say that chomp SMS is the most efficient and complete app for sending and receiving messages. It loads a bit slower than my default app and, despite the vast number of themes, they are simple variations of the same UI.

Luck has it, that chomp SMS also features a reasonably powerful customization tool. You can change the aspect of every element, from the header bar to the font color of message dates. In this respect, you can create custom themes that will, no doubt, be superior to the ones being offered. It's also not very hard to do it.

What I would care to mention is that by tapping in the middle of the color wheel, you can access the hexadecimal color values. These are very valuable for giving your theme a consistent look. Without it, you would probably never be able to set the same colors over the three different screens: the Conversation, the Conversation List, and the Quick Reply pop-up.

Oh yes, with chomp SMS you can send new messages from the Notifications screen. This pop-up feature means that you can access your contact list and send messages without closing the running app. It is especially useful if you have set your system to close applications on exit.

There are some other convenient features, such as having messages pop-up on your screen, even if your screen is locked. You can set how you want this feature to behave, so it's highly customizable.

Another feature that I found very useful is the one that removes accents and diacritics from the text body. You know, some languages make heavy use of these particular characters, and in the SMS world, this means extra costs. chomp SMS can convert these characters to their base versions if the text exceeds the size of one SMS message. This feature removes the need for teaching alternative versions of the same words to your keyboard. Well, if you already trained the keyboard to discriminate words in this way, you will need to have it forget some of them.

Final Thoughts

I enjoy using chomp SMS as my default messaging app. It has many relevant options and features, and there are no ads in sight. Of course, this could mean that I'm providing my contact list to some third party I never heard of, but who cares, right?
